John M. Byrne, is Chairman - FFOF Board of Directors. In addition Jack is the Sustainability Coordinator for Middlebury College, Middlebury Vermont. Jack directs the Sustainability Programs at Middlebury college - issues including, energy, CO2 mitigation, recycling, sustainable development curricula integration and advisement to the entire campus community. Jack serves on the board of several other non-profits. He was a founder and Executive Director of River Watch Network, a national organization supporting community-based watershed conservation. His experience includes work in the public and private sectors in organizational development, strategic planning, scenario development, fund raising, collaborative processes, learning technologies and project management. He has published numerous articles and recently edited "Pro-Con Environment" published by Grolier. Jack holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Law from Vermont Law School and a Bachelors of Science in Biology from the Honors College at Kent State University.
Keith A. Wheeler, is President - FFOF Board of Directors, whose mission is to provide new learning leadership for sustainable development both nationally and internationally through the R&D efforts of the Center. FFOF specializes in the integration of science and technology in creating new learning tools about sustainability solutions. In addition, Keith serves as the Chairman and CEO of ZedX Inc., a Pennsylvania based IT company that focuses on developing decision support solutions for the agriculture, energy and climate risk sectors. Keith is the current Chair of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Commission on Education and Communication and oversees the World Conservation Learning Network. Keith was the PI for a US Department of Education Technology Challenge Grant titled "Education for a Sustainable Future". In addition, Keith served on Presidents Clinton's Council for Sustainable Development in the 1990s and served as project director for a US Government sponsored R&D project dealing with the creation of the Sustainable Development Extension Network. Keith was the first Executive Director and CEO of Global Rivers Environmental Education Network (GREEN), a 135 nation international non-governmental organization that was a recognized leader in watershed education and conservation. He was the Assistant Director for the Adirondack Park Agency, leading the development of several multi-million-dollar Environmental Education centers throughout New York State. Keith served as an internationally recognized research scientist and international development specialists for the USDA and for Cornell University from 1976-1988. Keith holds graduate degrees in environmental and soil science from Cornell University and undergraduate degrees in science from Syracuse University. Keith has taught several courses at Cornell University. He has presented keynote addresses to business, scientific, technology and education conferences throughout the world on a variety of environmental and educational policy issues. He has authored over a dozen peer review publications, edited several books and dozens of general publications. He recently published a book entitled Education for Sustainability: A Paradigm of Hope for the 21st Century published by Springer and co-edited "Pro-Con Environment" published by Grolier.
Steve C. Hulbert, Treasurer/Secretary - FFOF Board of Directors, has been a member of the President's Council on Sustainable Development Education Task Force; the US EPA Environmental Education Advisory Council; the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network as President, and on the White House Forum, "Education About the Environment Steering Committee as a Board Member. He has received environmental and conservation awards including: The Conservation Fund Alexander Calder Award; The Washington Rivers Council Leadership in Business Award; the Chevron/Times Mirror National Conservation Award; the Washington Department of Wildlife's Volunteer of the Year Award; the Trout Unlimited National Conservationist of the Year Award; the Association of Washington Business Environmental Innovator Award; the Washington State Environmental Excellence Award for Business and Industry; and the Trout Unlimited Corporate Conservationist of the Year - Washington.Mr. Hulbert graduated cum laude from the University of Utah with a Bachelor's degree in University Studies, majoring in Business and Film Production. In 1996, he co-authored, "Education for Sustainability," Building Public-Private Partnerships, "An Agenda for Action," which was published by the White House Office of Science and Technology. Mr. Hulbert is Owner and President of Hulbert Auto Park in Olympia, Washington. He has owned and operated Saturn of Olympia, Hulbert Pontiac-Cadillac and Palm Beach Toyota. As an active member of the community, Mr. Hulbert has served on the board of directors for the Association of Washington Business, Wolf Haven International, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Olympia, and the Salvation Army of Olympia. He has served as a member of the Pontiac National Dealer Council and Pontiac Zone Deal Council, and has been President of the Thurston County Automobile Dealers Association.
Dr. Karen Cohen, Vice Chair of FFOF Board of Directors, has extensive experience as a principal research scientist at MIT and research associate at Harvard; as founder, CEO and President of two software and courseware companies, designing and evaluating on-line learning, information, training and communication systems; as a consultant to corporations and academia in evaluation, human factors, training and program effectiveness; as founder and Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Science Education and Technology; as editor of the book series, INNOVATIONS IN SCIENCE EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY (Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers; as first woman Director of Shawmut Bank; and as Founder and President of Karen C. Cohen and Associates, a consulting firm.
Dr. Brad Smith, FFOF Board of Directors, was named Dean of Huxley College of Environmental Studies at Western Washington University in September of 1994. Prior to his appointment, Dr. Smith had served for three years as the first Director of the Office of Environmental Education for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and as a Special Assistant to the administrator of the EPA. He also served as an acting Associate Administrator of the EPA and Acting President of the National Environmental Education and Training Foundation. From 1975 to 1990 Dr. Smith was a professor of political science and biology, and concurrently was executive director of Michigan's Tobico Marsh National Refuge from 1982 to 1990. Currently Dr. Smith serves on numerous boards and commissions including the President's Council for Sustainable Development (Education Task Force). His most recent publications include co-author of Environmental Science: A Study of Interrelationships, 7th edition 2000, and Environmental Science Field Guide and Laboratory Manual, 9th edition 2004.
Jack Padalino, FFOF Board of Directors, is the Founding President of the Brandwein Institute, which has as its focus the engagement of educators (both formal and informal) and field based research scientists to further advance the translation of current place-based field research with state of the art education programs. The Brandwein Institute currently has over 80 fellows that will be drawn upon for technical consulting during the course of this project. Jack was the founding President of the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Dingmans Ferry, PA, and is past president of the American Nature Studies Society and the John Burroughs Association.
E.W."Bill" Stetson III, FFOF Board of Directors, has devoted his life to energy, natural resources planning and media production. Mr. Stetson directed the Vermont/New Hampshire operations of the Connecticut River Watershed Council before becoming vice president and then president of his family's Canadian-based oil and gas exploration company, which he sold after ten profitable years. He then produced a series of environmental television and radio programs, and executive produced the award winning feature film, "My Mother's Early Lovers", which tackles the difficult topic of domestic violence.Mr. Stetson co-founded River Watch Network, later merging it with River Network. He founded the Vermont Film Commission, serves on the Council of Environmental Advisers for the Governor of Vermont, as well as on his Business and Environment Subcommittee. He advises the prestigious Committee on the Environment at Harvard University, where he earned a bachelors degree in government and studied energy economics in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
